Now for the fun part.
The Eckert Bat Cave is about 6-8 miles down the James River Road, a winding gravel road that goes over a couple low water crossings. It's pretty cool to check out the bat emergence at dusk Thursday through Sunday from May to October.
Santos in Mason has great gorditas, queso, and crispy tacos. And the wine bar two doors over (Sandstone Cellars Winery) has wine-a-ritas that are pretty solid with a great little courtyard. They also let you walk to Santos with them.
Another great addition to the main square is Murphy Creek Cellars, with a great assortment of wine, as well as a tasting bar offering four different flights.
Coopers BBQ is top notch. A must while you're in town!
Lea Lou's is a great pizza joint / dance hall / beer garden right on the town square. Highly recommended!
Another great stop on the way from Llano to Mason is the charming one-stop town of Castell. Great for a beer at the general store!
Willow Creek Cafe is on the main square and has great patty melts, incredible buttermilk pecan pies, as well as a whole menu of solid offerings.
The old Odeon theater on the main town square is neat, and sometimes has concerts.
Texas Monthly did a piece about the area not too long ago. Worth a quick read:

Other attractions:
-the island in front of the property. One of the top six in Texas according to Texas Highways:
https://texashighways.com/things-to-do/on-the-wate...
-plenty of scenic back roads to explore.
-a 4wd off-road ranch if you're into that thing (Katemcy Rocks).
-kayaking (we have kayaks and a canoe for rent, and the manager can set up a shuttle to the next crossing up river).
-tubing, fishing, cliff jumping, and a whole lot of relaxing.
